Be Your Own Boss
Shape your career around your lifestyle with a flexible schedule that works for you.
Whether you prefer working mornings, evenings, weekdays, or weekends, you’re in control of your hours and your calendar.
Ditch the traditional 9-to-5 and enjoy a career that fits around your life – not the other way around.
Job Satisfaction
Instructors from all walks of life agree – there’s nothing more rewarding than helping a learner pass their test.
As a driving instructor, you’ll get to experience this proud moment multiple times a year, making a real difference in people’s lives.
Work Local
Our driving instructors typically operate within a 30-minute radius of home, covering around 6 to 8 nearby postcodes, including their own.
In urban areas, your area may be more compact, while in rural locations, you might cover a slightly wider area to accommodate fewer learners.
This approach helps you stay connected to your community while keeping travel time between lessons to a minimum.
Essential Qualities for a Driving Instructor
Dependability
Learners rely on their instructor to be present, prepared, and consistent. Building trust through reliability is crucial for a successful teaching experience.
Time Management
Arriving on time for lessons reflects professionalism and respect for students’ schedules. Staying punctual also helps maintain a smooth and efficient workflow.
Patience & Understanding
Every learner progresses differently, and some may find driving stressful. A calm and patient approach ensures a positive learning environment and helps build confidence behind the wheel.
Strong People Skills
Whether you’re self-employed or working with a driving school, great customer service is key. Being approachable, professional, and supportive helps retain students and build a strong reputation.
Enjoy Working with Others
Teaching involves meeting new people with different personalities and learning styles. If you’re open-minded and enjoy helping others succeed, this could be the ideal career for you.
Requirements
Full UK Driving Licence
You must have held a full UK (or equivalent) driving licence for at least 3 years.
Clean Driving Record
A clean history is essential – no driving bans in the last 4 years and no more than five penalty points on your licence. Leading by example ensures you’re the right person to teach safe driving habits.
Willingness to complete a DBS Check
All driving instructors must undergo an enhanced DBS check, ensuring they are vetted to work safely with learners – it’s essential that instructors are willing to complete this process. If you currently have a DBS Check with another company, you will still need to complete a fresh DBS Check.
How to Qualify as a Driving Instructor
Your Route to Becoming a DVSA-Approved Instructor
Becoming a DVSA-approved driving instructor involves completing three qualification tests, covering your knowledge, driving ability, and instructional skills.
There is also the option to apply for a Trainee Licence to earn while you learn!
Part 1 – Theory and
Hazard Perception
This is the first of three tests required to become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) and focuses on the theory. It consists of two sections:
- Multiple-choice questions – 100 questions covering key driving and instructional topics.
- Hazard perception – A video-based assessment that tests your ability to identify potential hazards on the road.
Both sections are taken together as a single test, and you must pass both to succeed.
After passing the theory test, you’ll need to complete the remaining assessments within two years; otherwise, you’ll have to restart the process.
Part 2:
Your Driving Ability
The driving test requires you to demonstrate a high level of competence behind the wheel.
Lasting approximately one hour, the test allows a maximum of six driver faults.
Our Part 2 trainers hold Advanced Driving Qualifications that exceed the test requirements, ensuring you receive expert guidance.
During the assessment, you must demonstrate:
- An eco-friendly driving approach
- Skilled control of the vehicle
- Correct road positioning and procedure
- Awareness of other road users and appropriate responses
- Good judgment of speed, distance, and timing
- Consideration for the safety and convenience of others
Part 3:
Instructional Ability
The Instructional Ability test requires you to demonstrate a high level of competence instructing a pupil around a route.
Lasting between 45 minutes and 1 hour, you will deliver a planned lesson to a pupil, of your choosing.
During the assessment, you must demonstrate:
- Client-centred teaching tailored to your pupil.
- Clear communication and coaching skills.
- Effective risk management for a safe lesson.
- Adaptability based on your pupil’s progress.
- Encouraging self-reflection and learning.
- Meeting DVSA’s national training standards.
Earn While You Learn on a Trainee Licence!
You can start earning while training to become a driving instructor!
With a Trainee Driving Instructor Licence (pink badge), you can teach real students under supervision, gain valuable hands-on experience, and refine your teaching skills – all while progressing toward full certification.
Here’s how it works:
A Trainee Driving Instructor Licence allows you to teach lessons with oversight from a fully qualified instructor. This opportunity lets you earn while building practical experience and enhancing your teaching techniques.
Pass Part 1: The Driving Instructor Theory Test
Pass Part 2: The Practical Driving Test
After passing, your Driver Training Manager will get in touch to arrange your start date, car, and work area, providing all the details you’ll need. If you require a car, let us know at this point, so we can discuss your requirements and quote a price, and get this ready for your start date.
Complete 40 Hours of Training: 20 Hours In-Car and 20 Hours Online Training
Once you’ve completed the first two assessments, and Part 3 training, consisting of 20 hours of in-car training and 20 hours of online sessions, you’ll be ready to start earning while you learn! Giving you the ability to start to build your business and your confidence in a real world setting.
Start Earning with your Trainee Licence: Take Part in Additional Training
While on a trainee licence, you must complete an additional 20 hours of training.
With us we complete free online training (10 hours), and the remaining 10 hours in car training is paid directly to your trainer at approximately £40 per hour (prices vary depending on your area).
